Gynaecological surgery at Canadian Medical: A combination of quality and convenience
Article24. 05. 2022 Gynecology
Highly trained doctors, short appointment times, high-quality facilities and personal care. According to MUDr. Tereza Čeledová, these are all benefits that Canadian Medical offers to our surgical clients.
What is the reason behind building up surgical capacities at Canadian Medical?
We have striven with our team to offer more than just preventive care, which is of course very important and necessary. Thanks to preventive care, we catch a number of pathologies that we are able to treat very effectively in our operating theatre. We focus on minor procedures; performing more complicated surgeries is certainly not our goal or mission as a premium outpatient care facility. At CM, we have an operating theatre with modern equipment and wonderful facilities, and it would be a pity not to also provide this type of care for our clients. We are pleased to refer more complicated procedures to the Institute for the Care of Mother and Child, with which we have a great arrangement and collaboration.
Another advantage for our clients is that their care is in the hands of a single specialist, from outpatient care, through the surgical procedure, to follow-up care.
Definitely. When we refer our clients to various other hospital facilities, we can never ensure sufficient comfort for them or guarantee who will operate on them, or even if the procedure will be performed at all. It sometimes happens that we refer a client from the outpatient clinic for a procedure with a finding for which a colleague at the hospital does not recommend surgery. This is an issue with continuity of care – they are seeing her for the first time at the given moment. The doctor may therefore recommend postponing the procedure, which is unpleasant for both the referring physician and the patient.
Another important factor in treating pathologies is the speed with which clients receive treatment. How does that work at Canadian Medical?
That is true – when our colleagues refer a client to another facility, she waits longer for an appointment, and then we wait for the histology results and the report. At CM, everything is done quickly and, mainly, in one place. My colleague from the Canadian Medical outpatient clinic then sees everything on the computer – the surgical protocol, the histology results; everything is available immediately. This was one of the reasons that we started performing minor surgical procedures here – it’s beneficial for both the clients and the doctors. It’s a combination of high-quality care and convenience.
You mentioned that when a client is sent to another facility, you – as an outpatient specialist – do not have any influence over how the procedure will be carried out. Who on your team takes care of the clients before and after a procedure?
At university hospitals, minor procedures are often performed by doctors with little experience; I understand that, as we all had to learn how to perform procedures and surgeries. In my opinion, however, that doesn’t sit well with our concept of premium care. Our team includes surgeons with many years of experience, so we are able to guarantee our colleagues’ clients a high level of medical education and comprehensive care: we personally carry out consultations, diagnoses and surgical procedures, and we also provide post-operative care and subsequent monitoring. Clients have our contact information, can get instructions from us, and call or write us if they have any problems. This is a completely different dimension of care than when they are referred to another facility.
Besides surgery, what else does your specialisation at Canadian Medical involve?
I am very pleased that my colleague MUDr. Chod performs and guarantees expert colposcopic examinations of the cervix. I also focus on this issue at Waltrovka. All of the examinations at the colposcopy facility are covered by health insurance, without any additional fees. We can thus promptly address cervical pathologies, carry out conisation under general anaesthesia and treat the cervix under local anaesthesia as needed. It seems that there are enough options in Prague in this area, but again – the appointment times are long, while the risk of delay is high. It is necessary to perform colposcopic cervical examinations relatively frequently and it would be a pity not to take advantage of the high level of education and equipment that we have at Canadian Medical!
To sum up, some colleagues may take it as a marginal thing or a matter of course, but the combination of these examination methods and surgery, as we offer it at CM, is rare among premium medical clinics. Few facilities in the Czech Republic can offer their clients anything similar, whereas at CM, the entire process is handled by a single team.
How did you get into surgery?
I was very fortunate that I started out as a doctor at the university hospital in Brno. Due to the number of surgeries and doctors at the clinic at that time, I actually got into surgery right after completing my studies; they literally encouraged us to do that. It was very intense and demanding, but I still draw on what I learned there. And then my second bit of good fortune was that later, after I gained certification, a colleague from the clinic, who had built a private practice in Brno focusing on gynaecological surgery and expert colposcopy, took me under his wing. I can now apply my experience from those places to building our Canadian Medical surgical team.
Same-day surgery in the specialisation of gynaecology is a trend in contemporary medicine that is also available to Canadian Medical clients.
