What is the Andes hantavirus?

Hantaviruses are viruses primarily transmitted by rodents. People can become infected, for example, by inhaling dust contaminated with the urine, droppings, or saliva of infected rodents. Human-to-human transmission is very rare, but isolated cases have been reported for the Andes virus strain.

How can you protect yourself?

  • avoid contact with rodents and their droppings,
  • avoid inhaling dust in unclean or enclosed spaces,
  • maintain proper hand hygiene,
  • contact a doctor if you develop health problems after returning from risk areas.
