What are pneumococcal infections?
Pneumococcal infections are transmitted by air and cause mild respiratory disease, infections of the sinus and middle ear, pneumonia, meningitis or sepsis. Pneumococcal diseases is transmitted by infected individuals who may not always show any symptoms. The disease can occur as an internal infection within the carrier due to a favorable weakened state of the immune system, allowing for the bacteria to thrive and spread. The bacteria responsible for causing this disease is Streptococcus pneumoniae. This bacteria can be found in the nasopharynx regions of a healthy individual and can then spread to other parts of the body. Symptoms often include a strong fever, coughing, shortness of breath and chest pains. The infection must be treated by antibiotics. Higher risk groups include children below the age of 5 as well as senior citizens.
