Vaccination: The best protection against tick-borne encephalitis
Article28. 02. 2025
Tick-borne encephalitis (TBE) is a serious viral illness that can lead to long-term health complications. The most effective way to protect yourself is through vaccination, which provides lasting immunity. With ticks active for most of the year, being proactive in your prevention efforts is essential. Don’t wait—take charge of your health now.
Why is protection against tick-borne encephalitis important?
Ticks not only carry Lyme disease but also transmit the more dangerous tick-borne encephalitis. This viral infection affects the brain and meninges, potentially resulting in severe health complications, including long-term neurological disorders. Preventive vaccination stands as your best defense against this disease.
Risk of Infection and serious consequences
Infected ticks are prevalent throughout the Czech Republic and can attach to anyone, regardless of age or activity level. The TBE virus can be transmitted as quickly as two hours after a tick bite. The disease manifests in two phases. The first phase may present flu-like symptoms like fever, headaches, and muscle pain. While some recover at this stage, about one-third may progress to a second phase where the virus impacts the brain and meninges. This phase can cause severe headaches, vomiting, movement disorders, and, in extreme cases, loss of consciousness. Older adults and those with weakened immune systems are at a higher risk for lasting complications.
Vaccination as the best prevention
Vaccination is your most effective means of protecting against tick-borne encephalitis. It can be administered at any time of the year and involves three doses. A booster is recommended three years after the initial vaccination, with further boosters every three to five years. This long-term protection significantly reduces the risk of serious health complications.
Additional preventive measures
Along with vaccination, you can reduce your risk of infection by following these key preventive measures:
- Use insect repellents
- Wear clothing that covers your body
- Thoroughly check your body for ticks after outdoor activities
- Remove any ticks immediately and disinfect the bite site
How to check your immunity?
If you're unsure whether your immunity from vaccination is still strong, consider taking a laboratory test to measure your antibody levels. This test will help determine if your protection remains effective or if a booster vaccination is necessary. Don’t postpone protecting your health. Tick-borne encephalitis cannot be treated with antibiotics, making prevention vital.
Vaccination is a simple, safe measure that empowers you to safeguard both your health and your life.
