Influenza (H3N2) – a quick guide (not only) for parents

Article

15. 12. 2025

In light of the current epidemiological situation related to influenza H3N2, we have prepared clear and practical information for parents on how to recognize the symptoms, how to care for a child at home, and when it is appropriate or necessary to contact a doctor.

What is influenza?
Influenza is a viral illness with a sudden onset and high fever. This season, influenza type A (H3N2) is predominant.

Typical symptoms:

  • sudden onset of symptoms
  • fever usually above 38.5 °C
  • muscle and headache pain
  • marked fatigue and weakness
  • dry cough

Home care:

  • bed rest
  • adequate fluid intake
  • paracetamol or ibuprofen to reduce fever
  • light, easily digestible food

Antibiotics are not effective against influenza.

Home testing:
Parents may use a home antigen test (Influenza A/B Ag test), ideally within the first 3 days of illness. A positive result confirms influenza; however, a negative result does not completely rule it out. If typical symptoms persist or the child’s condition worsens, contact a doctor even if the test result is negative.

When to seek medical attention immediately:

  • fever lasting longer than 3–4 days
  • shortness of breath or labored breathing
  • refusal of fluids or lack of urination
  • marked apathy, confusion, or seizures
  • worsening of the condition after temporary improvement

Return to school or daycare:
The child may return to kindergarten or school after the fever has resolved and their overall condition has improved, usually after 5–7 days.
