Home sleep monitor helps detect sleep disorders

A sleep monitor is a small, modern device that tracks your breathing and other vital signs while you sleep. It helps us spot possible problems such as pauses in breathing (known as apnoea), irregular breathing, or other issues that might affect the quality of your sleep and your overall health.

By watching your breathing patterns, the monitor can detect early warning signs that something might not be right — long before symptoms become more serious.
Using the device is easy and completely safe. When set up correctly, it gives us useful information about how you sleep and helps us take better care of your health.

Why are we giving you the device?

The main goal is to collect clear and reliable information about how you breathe, how your heart beats, and how much you move during the night — all in the comfort of your own home.
These details help us find out if you might have sleep-related problems that could otherwise go unnoticed, such as breathing pauses (apnoea), shallow or irregular breathing, or too much movement during sleep.
Such problems can be linked to daytime tiredness, poor concentration, high blood pressure, or even heart issues. By detecting them early, we can help prevent complications and offer you the right kind of support.
The results also help us decide whether you need further testing — such as a night in a sleep lab — or whether a specific treatment might be helpful.

What can the monitor tell us?

The sleep monitor shows whether your breathing stops or becomes irregular during the night. It also checks how often you move and how steady your breathing is.
We look at how long and how often these events happen to understand how serious the issue might be.
Some monitors can also track your heart rate, oxygen levels, and body position while you sleep, giving us a complete picture of your sleep quality.
This helps us see whether your sleep is restful and whether there are any signs of sleep disorders such as sleep apnoea or restless legs syndrome. The information we gather gives us a clear direction for what steps to take next to support your health.

How do we use the results?

After your night with the monitor, you simply bring the device back to the clinic. We will then carefully review the data it recorded — especially your breathing rate, any pauses in breathing, and how much you moved while you slept.
Based on the results, your doctor will let you know whether more testing is needed, or whether it’s time to start treatment to improve your sleep and overall well-being.
