Couple’s therapy can help you without any unnecessary fighting or stress

Couple’s therapy is most commonly used by married couples, long-term partners but also homosexual couples who have difficulties in their relationship and are willing to deal with them. Generally speaking, couple’s therapy is suitable in situations where the problems are primarily relationship-based rather than personal in nature.

The therapy aims to motivate the partners to talk about their problems openly and in a civilized manner as well as to communicate together better. This form of therapy solves partnership conflicts and coexistence issues as well as improves communication and mutual empathy. This in turn means that partners are able to see the other person’s situation from their viewpoint.

The approach of the therapist towards the couple with regards to this therapy is different from psychotherapy which focuses on each individual separately. On the other hand, the basic principles which ensure a safe environment during the therapy process as well as the accepting attitude of the therapist are shared by both therapy types.

Conditions for couple’s therapy

This type of therapy differs from individual therapy in its very core alone. The following points are necessary to ensure quality and effectiveness of couples’ therapy:

  • Working with couples as opposed with the individual partner requires finding better solutions for “us” and not for “me” or “you”.
  • Both partners should have at least basic motivation to work on saving their relationship despite often finding themselves in conflict situations where one force keeps them in and the other pulls them away from a relationship.
  • Both partners should be willing to meet with the therapist and to at least agree a minimal common target (this could be a civilized break-up or in the better scenario, a solution to their partnership crisis).

The therapist aims to create such a situation in which both sides feel that they are perceived equally by the therapist. Both partners should be given sufficient space to express their opinions, emotions and needs. The therapist cannot reject their opinions or judge them. The therapist accepts the information from both parties in equal amounts. The therapist does not aim to know who is right, but rather to listen to each side independently and to best understand what they are both going through. We should not forget that the aim of this therapy is to achieve the best possible solution for “us”.

Why undergo therapy?

If you are looking to save your relationship, couple’s therapy will better help you understand the core of your problem and make it possible to solve it.

  • The partners present their problems independently before the therapist and without any unnecessary attacks or fighting.
  • The two partners mutually realize their partner’s assessment of the whole situation but also their own while communicating it to the partner and the therapist.
  • The explanation of the situation by both partners often untangles problems during the therapy since each person perceives the reality differently.

How often do you need to attend?

The number of required sessions is highly individual in nature and it is therefore not possible to say whether five sessions, ten sessions or perhaps an entire year of them will be able to provide a solution. That said, it is usually recommended that the couple visits the therapist once a week for a period of several months. This depends significantly on how the couple approach it and how the therapy progresses. It is a commitment and investment that not everyone is willing to undergo. However, it can lead to saving your relationship and strengthening it. On the other hand, if necessary, it can help you leave your partner with honor while preventing the loss of a loved one.

We wish you the best of luck.
