Bruxism, or teeth grinding. Are you suffering from it too?

Bruxism is the medical term for unconscious teeth clenching and grinding. It is not a bad behavioral habit but rather an unconscious process. Bruxism falls into the category of parafunctional activities, which also include lip biting or tongue chewing.

There are two main types of bruxism, depending on when it occurs:

  • Sleep bruxism: This type involves unconscious clenching and grinding of teeth during sleep. When a specific cause cannot be identified, it is referred to as primary bruxism. Secondary bruxism occurs as a result of another condition, and if it is caused by medication side effects, it is known as iatrogenic bruxism.
  • Awake bruxism: Unlike sleep bruxism, awake bruxism occurs during the day when you are fully conscious. It is often triggered by stress or anxiety but can also be associated with sleep disorders, increased consumption of alcohol, caffeine, or nicotine, or as a side effect of medications.

How bruxism manifests

Since teeth grinding during sleep is unconscious, bruxism is often recognized by its consequences. Typical symptoms include tooth and jaw joint pain, muscle tension in the head and neck area, and even migraines.

Bruxism can have serious consequences

The health impacts of bruxism can be significant and may greatly affect the quality of life. Chronic tension in the jaw muscles can lead to stiffness and persistent pain. These physical difficulties are often accompanied by psychological problems, such as sleep disorders, nervous tension, and an overall feeling of discomfort.

What are the treatment methods?

The first step should be a consultation with a dentist or maxillofacial surgeon. These specialists can accurately diagnose bruxism, identify its causes, and suggest appropriate treatment methods.

Modern solution: Injections for treatment

One of the most modern and effective methods for treating bruxism is the use of botulinum toxin. This well-known wrinkle treatment can relax the jaw muscles and reduce teeth grinding. The substance is injected in small amounts into the jaw muscles. It temporarily weakens the muscles, reducing their ability to grind and clench teeth. The effects last for several months, after which treatment may need to be repeated.

Benefits of botulinum toxin treatment

  • Significant improvement in symptoms within a few days after application
  • It is a simple and non-invasive procedure
  • You can immediately resume your normal activities after the procedure
