Aesthetic mini-phlebectomy

An aesthetic mini-phlebectomy is a minimally invasive surgical procedure performed under local anaesthesia. The procedure is focused on removing lateral varicose veins via small incisions using special surgical instruments.

The purpose of this procedure is to improve the aesthetic appearance of the leg, particularly by means of removing bulging superficial veins. A mini-phlebectomy is ideal for patients who are seeking an effective and quick solution to their venous problems without the necessity of long convalescence. The main veins of the superficial venous system are not treated using this method.

A mini-phlebectomy is performed as

  • a stand-alone procedure: In the event that the main veins of the superficial venous system are in good condition.
  • part of a procedure performed on the main veins: In the case of a greater extent of varicosity, it is possible to perform a mini-phlebectomy concurrently with a procedure on the main truncal veins using, for example, endovenous laser therapy (EVLT).
  • supplementary procedure: In the case of a lesser extent of varicosity, a mini-phlebectomy can be performed a few months after the main cause has been resolved, particularly after treatment of the main truncal vein. In some cases, varicosity may spontaneously disappear to such an extent that a mini-phlebectomy is no longer necessary.

For whom it is appropriate

An aesthetic mini-phlebectomy is appropriate for patients with small to medium-sized varicose veins who want to improve the appearance of their legs and alleviate unpleasant symptoms such as pain, swelling and feelings of heaviness.

Course of the procedure

Treatment starts with a detailed ultrasound examination of the damaged veins. Prior to the procedure itself, the area around the damaged veins is numbed with a local anaesthetic. The surgeon subsequently makes small incisions in the skin, through which the damaged veins are removed using special instruments. These incisions are so small that they do not require sutures. The whole procedure takes approximately 30-60 minutes, depending on the scope of damaged veins, and the not patient can usually go home shortly after the procedure has been completed.
