Angiology is a specialized subgroup of internal medicine that is focused on the prevention, diagnosis and treatment of vascular disease and the entire circulatory system. In simple terms, it covers the treatment of various vascular issues of the human body. Patients are most commonly sent to an angiologist by general practitioners, neurologists, diabetologists, orthopedists or other specialists.
The most common vascular diseases which are treated by angiologists include atherosclerosis (arteriosclerosis), aneurysm (bulges in the walls of blood vessels) as well a developmental defects and malformations of arteries (blood vessels). In terms of venous insufficiency some of the most common diseases include venous insufficiency itself, venous malformation and thromboembolism (treated in cooperation with a hematologist).
Angiology cooperates with almost all other medical fields. These are generally internally-focused (immunology, nephrology, pneumology and diabetology) because the largest fraction of diseases being treated affect the blood vessels. Cardiology is a related medical field - angiology closely cooperates with it when treating various cardiovascular diseases such as myocardial infarction (heart attacks), hypertension, lower limb ischemia etc.
The following vascular examinations are most commonly used in angiology:
- Ultrasonography (USG)
- Doppler echocardiography
- Various functional tests to assess organ and tissue perfusion (level of blood supply)
