The name implies that this problem occurs with babies only in the first few months. However some children are more prone to having this problem. Usually these are prematurely born children or those who were born very small, or have not been breastfed. This problem is also more prevalent with boys than girls. The problem can of course happen to a girl who is being breastfed. There are many methods to ease the pain such as massages, exercise, certain positions, applying warm pads or fennel tea.
This infant problem associated with a higher production of gases is physiological in nature. Before the child is born, he/she has a sterile digestive tract, which virtually does not have any bacteria. After birth, the tract is inhabited by various positive digestive bacteria which aid in correct digestion and the intestines slowly learn to digest correctly. Some babies experience difficulties, while others less so. Genetics and the mother’s regime play a role as well. Crucially, it is not an illness but a natural process.
